Hay Time

Well the Hay Man has come and gone. Not a very successful or exciting event this year with our usual quantity down from about 280 to a measly 75! It's been an exceptionally dry year down here with the vital growing months of September and October being virtually rain free. All Tasmanian farmers and livestock owner are now facing a massive hay shortage this coming Winter. Hay in the paddock which usually costs $5 or $6 a bale is already sitting at $12 , with local produce stores selling it for almost $20 a bale! Heaven knows how much it will be by the end of Winter.
It looked quite promising in some patches!!!
But we knew it would be scarce ,so we even trimmed up around the edges and threw into the middle to help try boost the numbers!
Geoff and Tinks checking it out.
Toggles wasn't impressed either.
So back Tony came and started baling........one!!!
Two...........................................three..............................................four....................!!!!
We finally struggled to 75 which was actually about 20 more then what we were expecting!
And it didn't take long to get in at all!
(Farm dog....!)
But now (thanks to the wonderful generosity of my Mum and Dad who hayed their paddock for the very first time for us) and being able to buy some from Geoff's Dad..........we should just scrape through this Winter and hope next year we get a bumper crop to top it all up!
Not much to sing and dance about but what the heck!!!

  2. It's crazy indeed! For us here in Tassie anyway! We don't realise how lucky we are sometimes until we get a dry year like this!!
